Introducing ArchaeoPhysica
Founded in 1998 as a specialist provider of geophysical services to archaeology, ArchaeoPhysica is one of the most established in Europe in this sector. We have undertaken surveys in most parts of the UK and further afield using a spectrum of techniques and instrumentation. Senior partners have between them almost 30 years experience of geophysical service provision across a wide range of projects and clients.
Clients, including many of the principal UK archaeological consultants, use our services because:
- we provide efficient & practical solutions, with bespoke specifications
- our multisensor acquisition systems allow rapid large area survey, e.g. 50 - 75 hectares per week
- we provide analysis & interpretation with a sound geoscience basis
- we undertake reliable geophysical investigation in 'difficult' environments, including deeply alluviated soils
Key innovations by ArchaeoPhysica:
- introduction of caesium magnetometer to commercial UK archaeology in 1999
- GNSS (GPS) tracked electromagnetic survey in Ireland and UK from 2003
- first magnetometer cart for archaeology in the UK in service from summer 2003
- development of advanced geophysical processing techniques for total field data
- towed multisensor platform (designed for high-quality high-resolution data collection) from 2010
Community, education & contribution to the discipline:
- delivery field geophysics tuition for nearly 100 undergraduate, postgraduate and other students since 2006
- support for numerous community archaeology projects with consultancy, survey, public involvement & talks
- consultees for updated (2008) EH guidelines for geophysics in archaeology
- active involvement in ISAP and IfA GeoSIG
- geophysical and metric survey support for the Digging Dad's Army project
- Best Poster Award winner EIGG 2006 “Recent Advances in Archaeological Geophysics”
- British Archaeological Awards 2008 Highly Commended (with Angie Bolton & Andrew Gardner) for “Best Archaeological Discovery”
